I spent last Friday afternoon walking and exploring the Vicksburg National Military Park. After the recent long stretch of damp cold weather, I was fortunate to get a beautiful day.

The Park, part of the National Park System, has multiple memorials to lives lost during the key Civil War battle fought here. I found the Illinois State Monument to be particularly fascinating as it reminded me of a basilica I saw in Rome.
